Infographic: Where is the Supply Chain Risk?

by | Mar 12, 2024 | Risk Management

Getting food from the farm to your table is complex, and technology is critical in making that happen. However, the technology can also create supply chain risk at each stage of that process.

As we’ve seen in multiple cases – from Dutch supermarkets running out of cheese to Americold being unable to assign trucks to a door – cyber risk prevented food from getting to the consumer’s table.

In previous blog posts, we discussed the importance of assessing and managing risk. As we move to the next phase of the story, it’s critical to understand how potential cyber threats can affect each stage of the supply chain.

In the infographic below, we investigate the parts of the supply chain that the consumer rarely sees. Each participant can put the other at risk, from the packer to the warehouse to logistics and transport.

Upstream and downstream supply chain risk, as it’s commonly known, can directly impact your business operations. If a major port shuts down (which happened in Australia), shipping goods in and out of a country stops. If the world’s largest meat supplier is disabled in a ransomware attack (JBS paid the $11M ransom), then ranchers cannot sell their livestock, and supermarket orders go unfilled.
